Pulp Therapy & Root Canal Treatment
Pulp therapy and root canal treatment both address problems inside the tooth — specifically damage or infection to the inner pulp tissue. At Ryerson Smile Boutique, we perform both procedures with gentle technique and modern anesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience. Whether your child needs pulp therapy to save a developing tooth, or you need a root canal to relieve pain and prevent extraction, our team will guide you through every step with care.
What is it?
Pulp therapy and root canal treatment are procedures that address damage or infection inside a tooth. Pulp therapy is used when the inner pulp has been compromised by deep decay, trauma, or infection — often in children — and the goal is to preserve the tooth. Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside an adult tooth, cleans and seals the canals, and prevents reinfection to save the tooth from extraction.
How it works?
For pulp therapy, the dentist removes part or all of the infected pulp depending on severity, treats the area with medicated material, and seals the tooth with a protective restoration. For root canal treatment, a small opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp chamber, infected tissue is removed, the canals are shaped and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed — typically followed by a crown.
How it helps?
Both procedures eliminate pain caused by infection, save the natural tooth, prevent the spread of bacteria to surrounding teeth and bone, and restore full function. Pulp therapy also maintains proper alignment of surrounding teeth, particularly important in younger patients.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Who might consider this treatment?
Pulp therapy is often recommended for children or patients with a tooth where the pulp has been affected by deep decay or injury but saving the tooth is still possible. Root canal treatment is for patients with severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or signs of infection pointing to an issue with the inner pulp.
What is the typical experience?
For both procedures, the area is thoroughly numbed before treatment begins. Pulp tissue is treated or removed, the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and a crown is typically placed to protect it. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable modern endodontic treatment is.
How long does it usually take?
Most cases are completed in one appointment of 60–90 minutes. Root canals occasionally require a second visit depending on complexity.
Is there anything to keep in mind?
A crown is typically recommended after both procedures to protect the treated tooth. Modern root canals and pulp therapy are no more uncomfortable than a routine filling.
What should I know about recovery after?
Some soreness for a few days is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients return to their regular routine the next day.
